Hey y'all I just wanna say something.

Wed Feb 15, 2017, 4:39 PM
I love and appreciate all of you, you're like my lovely little children.

But okay with that out of the way, this is a little message in regards to art theft and tracing. "Why are you bringing this up, Addison?" you ask, well I'll tell yah. Myself and my partner have had over the past year or so quite a few people coming to us claiming that ________ and ________ have been stealing our work. Occassionally there is someone who is tracing or reposting but MAJORITY we've come to find are people who are just inspired by our work. And I just want to make record of it here and now we don't mind if people are heavily inspired by our work, as long as they're not ripping off our characters it's fine. And hey, it's even okay to be inspired by our OCs too!! It just upsets me a bit that people keep bringing this up, it's hard to be an artist online these days because it's so easy to be accused of being a thief or tracer especially if you're only just starting out and trying to break into your own style, yanno? It's kind of discouraging to get such names slapped on you when you're only inspired and are honestly not tracing, copying or stealing work.

As far as heavily referencing our work however that is something we're both wary with, basically if we can see our work in someone else's it does make us uncomfortable but we're not going to go around accusing them of being a theif because they're not. What I can say in that regard though to those who are, just remember that referencing only one artist will actually hinder your work it's better to take bits and pieces from a bunch of artists to build your own style!!

And while you're at it guys, please go and give DollFangs a LOT of love. This artist works hard on their work and they are being accused of stealing from Pan. Which they are not, and in fact they're mutuals with us now. A lot of art theft themed instagrams are posting their stuff claiming it to be stolen, and they are being bullied to take their work down and it's just not acceptable. We REALLY appreciate you guys looking out for us, especially after all the instances of genuine theft that have happened ( i.e. that one user on insta a while back and the Currents repost ) but if you're suspicious of anyone please don't go around calling them out. Come to us first and be sure to provide some real, hard evidence alongside it not just 'this might be traced but idk' because it's stressful for us as well. I know I panic a lot when I recieve such messages haha.

Now, go forth and find a lot of inspiration you guys! It's not a shameful thing to be like "oh, I like how this artist draws face and how this other one nails anatomy!" because that is how you build yourself up! Also remember there is a fine line between inspiration and being a bit too heavy on referencing. But also remember that Pan and I like to consider ourselves artists who like to support others in the community, so if you ever need any advice or anything at all I know my door is always open to help you guys improve or just get the encouragement you need and deserve.

I love you all, never stop creating <3

don't hit me for any typos here lol I'm too lazy to re-read my journal atm I am working on the next page of Currents //sob

Im glad you think that way. One of my best friends has been bullied off this site countless times because of a certain artist saying she rips off their style (she totally doesn't btw) and traces (again she doesn't i've WATCHED her draw) Her art is now 180x different because she is so afraid of this artist getting to her and its nice to see artists thinking 'there's a difference between stealing and having similar to the same styles' Its just been bugging me cause my friend still gets nervous about doing some things cause her and that artist both have worlds with angels in them etc. Its just a nice change that not all more appreciated artists think people can't draw similar to them.

Ugh, it's why I give up on trying to make an original species these days.  Once you work so hard and get a result you like someone goes 'um that's not original, you stole that species design from blahblahblah' and shows you an image of what looks identical to creature you've struggled to create, but you swear you've never seen that design before in your life!
-_____-
my struggle with this is so real sobsob
And I agree that's it flattering to have someone look up to you, love your characters enough to make their own like them, and even draw in a similar style as you.  That's all cute and dandy.
I have, though, had my characters straight up stolen (mostly just commissioned images of them someone uses to role play and I don't like it but if a 'please and thank you' doesn't work than as long as they aren't making money off it in any way I can live)
And I did have an experience that left a sour taste in my mouth where someone liked a character of mine so much they made almost an exact copy (just changed the outfit and name) and even gave their version the same job and abilities my character had.  First they came to me saying 'hey I like this design can I make my own' and I replied 'well I can't stop you from making a character that is ____ species but here are some amazing alternatives' and tried to help them out basically, but they immediately replied with a 'oh no I actually already made it and posted it' so I actually found that offensive because it shows they didn't care if my answer was no, they already made up their mind and created a copy of something that is mine.
That...was pretty shitty but whatever...

Yikkees, that is shitty though! This journal is more about styles though than ripping on characters. When it comes to that I'm protective of my babies, however i'm fine if they're just inspired of w/e yanno? I've had people steal my OCs before so I feel you, it's not cool at all :C

But at the same time soooo many people have come to me about Rupert's design saying someone else has stolen it and I'm just like yo his design ain't all that original?? XD But that's just my opinion, I mean as far as merboy designs go it's not, but I still love and adore him so aha.

But no I totally feel you, stuff like that sucks sooooo much :C I'm sorry it happened to you, I really dig your OCs too

Style is fine!  I think in using the styles of other artists you appreciate helps you better develop your own, ya'know?
And of course, all these Riptide OC's are totally different, I think that is really cool and I'm sure it feels heartwarming to have people who are so inspired by your work and the world you created they want to become a part of it themselves!  But someone shoving a pink-haired Rupert in your face saying 'look my OC' would be very uncomfortable and cringey....But are the same time you're right there, you don't like, own the idea of merpeople, or the color blue, or freckles, lmao.

I guess there's just a point where it can go to far, even if you are a big fan, that's all I'm saying XD

aw thanks~

That IS true though! That's why I'm trying to express that there's a fine line where you can heavily reference an artist a bit TOO closely - even if your intentions aren't bad! Like dude when I draw I always have my fave artists up in tabs ready just in case I feel like I need a little help, but even so the inspiration is there, and it's best to have more than one as it shapes your style mucchh better ;v;

uhm no omg I totes own blue merboy baby ocs with de blue frecks and the pirate bf GAWD
